There’s always a new craze or trend sweeping the nation. Diets and “being healthy” will always be popular. The past few years, the trend has been juicing and smoothies. I can imagine that if done in moderation and the “proper” way, it can be good for you. But following a trend and not knowing why you’re doing it is the worst thing, if your goal is to really be healthy. A lot of times, it’s just as packed with sugar and other bad ingredients as everything else. And sometimes they’re just down right nasty. Check out some of the drinks you should STAY AWAY from…or at least do differently.
SUGAR! SUGAR! SUGAR! Isn’t the entire point of drinking a smoothie to make your diet more healthy?! Well the fact of the matter is MOST smoothies are packed with sugar which, let me tell you, is not only the opposite of helping your diet, but it’s worse than drinking two cans of Coca-Cola.
For years people assumed fruit juice was the way to go. ESPECIALLY orange juice because of Vitamin C. Turns out, most vegetables have more Vitamin C than drinking tons of orange juice. It’s not the miracle drink it’s been sold as. So, I’m not saying cut it out all together, but don’t drink it thinking it’s saving your life because it’s NOT. In fact the high fructose corn syrup is actually horrible for you. So just make sure you’re reading your labels.
To go into more detail…WARNING: too much fructose can lead fat deposits forming and worst…to liver damage. Not only are many fruit juices high in sugar, but they’re also high in carbs. I guess the point is that you can get Vitamin C from other places, WITHOUT the health risks. Again, READ YOUR LABELS!
This looks appetizing right? WRONG! Lol. Here’s the thing with many smoothies, besides the fact that they usually aren’t all they’re cracked up to be in regard to your health, but they also can be DISGUSTING! This looks like vomit. You know why…because this, my friends is a cheeseburger chilli smoothie. Ha! It was a whole campaign around an actual cheeseburger blended with ice and topped with ketchup and mustard. Lol. BUT. Before you get your panties in a bunch, it was a joke. So, DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME!
Greens! Yup. Broccoli, asparagus, kale, etc. etc. These can call be pretty good inside your smoothie, however mixed with the wrong thing, it can be disastrous. For example, asparagus has a pretty strong taste, mixing it with anything probably WILL NOT mask it. Leave it alone. Also mixing broccoli with anything like bananas or oranges is just nasty and bitter. Leave that one alone too!
What! Why? How!? This looks like smashed up oatmeal with blueberries on top. Well, it kinda is. Lol. I’ll start with the positives: OATMEAL IS VERY FILLING! And if it’s done right, it can really be good for you. I’m not a huge fan of blueberries, but I hear they’re like a top choice in the smoothie community. Lol. I suggest adding maple syrup AND mix your oatmeal in the night before so it’ll be a little softer.
This one looks like it could stand a chance. But as I’ve been saying, watch that sugar intake. Reminder: fructose is associated with cardiovascular disease, liver disease, gout, cancer, and arthritis. Just listing these things as we talk about getting healthy, gives me a headache.
Kale is good for you. Right? Here’s the thing though…it’s not all that appetizing. It should probably have a few banana and pineapple slices added to it just to cut that bitter taste. They also look like they’re missing some ice. But the point with kale is that it’s packed with fiber which actually is healthy for you and I guess that’s the point.
In all honesty, this doesn’t look too bad. The color is bright so I’m thinking okay, I could try this, but the texture is a little runny. Or, again, maybe it’s me. Lol. So the goal is to neutralize your flavors AND your textures. So some fruit. Check. A good amount of ice. Check. And believe it or not, add lemon juice. I call it the great balancing act.
Starbucks. A staple in America. It’s trendy, it pretty tasty and, hey it’s STARBUCKS. Addicting. And being that people were drinking a lot of it and very often, they had to appease some of us by allowing us to think the lower fat options are better for you. Okay, sure “better” than a “non skinny” or a “non low fat.” But let’s face it, THIS IS NOT A HEALTH DRINK! You want to get healthy? Stay way from America’s favorite.
WARNING: Naked juice DOES NOT help you look better naked! And I’m not kidding. Apparently, it has more sugar in it than Pepsi! 60 grams of sugar per bottle! The same as a Mountain Dew. There’s nothing wrong with drinking soda, BUT, there is if you THOUGHT it was good for you. Do your research because THIS AIN’T IT!
Frothy. Bright. Small. This one may be on the top of my list. Except it looks a little chewy. Make sure you’re removing the tough parts of the fruit. First of all, you don’t want to choke. And it’s called a smoothie for a reason, not a CHEWY.
Sure detoxing is a quick way to lose weight. Like when Beyonce went on the cayenne pepper, lemon, and maple syrup cleanse…everyone went crazy! Yes, she looked amazing and from what I’ve heard it works on us regular folks as well. So, yes try it, BUT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have a sensitive stomach. For me it was disgusting. Maybe I just did it wrong. I prefer my detox “juices” a bit more bearable, however they say the cayenne pepper decreases your appetite day by day which is why it’s effective. So, if you want to try it, let me know how that goes.
I guess the moral of the story is to, yes, drink whatever you want. It’s a free country. BUT like I mentioned earlier, do it with some knowledge and in moderation. Fooling yourself into drinking something that isn’t good for you…you might as well have a burger or two. Read up on this stuff. There are lots of ways to be healthy, lose weight and to have enjoyable drinks! Good luck!
